  • When the old meets the new: how to wear vintage in the 21st Century

    vintage style dresses UK

With vintage and retro clothing from each and every ear proving more popular than ever before, there’s no exact science to getting it right – and to wearing it right. But, let’s be honest, you can get it wrong; indeed, you could throw on a number of things from yesteryear and look like you’re on your way to a costume party. So, what can you do to make sure you’re on the right path? What tips should you try to follow to look chic and cool as well as retro and old-school…?

    Accessorise at first

Kicking things off in a simple way is probably a good idea. How to do that best? Well, nothing beats starting small – and that means supplementing a modern outfit with vintage accessories. An age-old favourite fashion practice, for sure; but one that rarely fails. For instance, minimal effort and maximum effect in this way can be achieved by throwing on a simple white t-shirt with blue jeans and a stylish, attention-grabbing belt from back in the day. Moreover, if you’re on a budget, accessories can be a handy way to get into the world of vintage/ retro fashion by not making costly mistakes – belts, brooches, bangles, necklaces, hats and scarves aren’t shouldn’t cost you the earth.

    Look to today’s trends

Lacking the confidence to trust your instincts fully and throw together an outfit from vintage items alone or vintage mixed with modern? You can find a middle ground between going for broke and the dull safe option of just going modern by letting today’s designer and media trendsetters guide you through what’ll look hot from among vintage/ retro pieces. Sounds unlikely? Don’t doubt it; what goes around comes around in fashion – it always has done; always will do. The vast majority of designers nowadays look back for influence and inspiration in looking forward, thus you may find it easier than you expect to match current trends with pieces from yesteryear.

    vintage style dresses UK

Mix it up by mixing it together

Once you’ve mastered looking urgent and current via vintage/ retro items, you can push further by mixing and matching old garments with their latest counterparts. Thanks to recycled trends, it’s – again – relatively easy to create an outfit by throwing together high-street clothes with those picked up from an online or shop-based vintage/ retro retailer, so long as you put some thought and care into it. For instance, how about combining an Edwardian blouse with a modern miniskirt? Or one of those classic ’50s-style vintage dresses with a plain t-shirt (or even a graphic-featuring one for a little more fun flair)? Plus, you can apply your accessorising skills – covered above – here; match not just clothes together but vintage and modern necklaces, brooches and scarves with your togs. The possibilities – so long as it looks good – are endless.

Build an outfit around a ‘statement item’

Touching on the last point above, how about picking out a single excellent vintage item and creating an entire outfit around it; make that item the stylish, flashy statement-making centrepiece and supplement it with current ‘lesser’ pieces and modern accessories? The trick here is about finding and blending together things that don’t offset but complement one another. For example, modern accessories will doubtless work well with one of those boho-bold vintage style dresses UK so long as they’re fairly basic and understated.

    Embrace different eras

As mentioned, clothes designers aren’t afraid to draw their inspiration from the entire history of fashion, so why shouldn’t you? Again, so long as you deploy thought and care, why not mix together items through different decades? Granted; it may take some time to get this exactly right – and it’ll probably require the sort of confidence that comes with an (ahem) vintage veteran. But there’s no reason to think you won’t get there and aren’t capable of doing it. After all, just imagine popping out for cocktails in a 1950s- or ’40s-style dress with a classic clutch or retro handbag and completing the outfit with a stylish coat from the ’60s or ’70s on top? In the land of vintage, the world can be your oyster!

  • Think before you click: tips for buying vintage online – and then wearing it

    vintage dresses

No question, the rise and rise of vintage clothes shopping – both online and otherwise – is seeing more and more people turning to older garments (and retro-style brand new pieces) to solve fashion conundrums. Yet, as with all things, there’s a way to do it properly; a way to do it that’s smart, ensuring you avoid mistakes by purchasing as effectively as possible. Indeed, all you need is to bear in mind a few tips– and combine a keen imaginative eye with a common-sense approach as you browse for bargains…

    vintage dressesKick-off with a classic

In starting out, there’s no need trying to climb Everest; that is, make you first vintage/ retro purchase something that’s far from the biggest challenge or risk to get you into the groove and off and running. We’re talking a classic here; maybe a 1950s-style beaded cardigan or an utterly timeless little black dress (LBD). Maybe one of those vintage dresses that you’re likely to reach for in the wardrobe time and again would be a good starting point.

    What lies beneath

Here’s an all too easy-to-overlook tip – bear in mind underwear. Not vintage/ retro-style underwear, but the undergarments you’re going to wear with your new purchases. Yes, they can make a difference. Why? Because back through the decades, underwear was designed differently and looked different to today’s when worn, which in turn ensured outer-garments had a certain appearance – the body a particular silhouette – when you put them on over the top. We’re talking the likes of corsets, girdles and bullet-bras here; some vintage pieces just don’t quite look right without them being worn underneath.

    Don’t forget your decades

When you step into the world of vintage/ retro fashion, you’re taking a step back into the past – and the past is, well, vast. For the most part, you’re going to be drawing on fashion that’s from the 20th Century; but, let’s face it, you could end up attracted to – and therefore buying – something from practically any of that century’s decades. That’s a lot of different eras of style to draw from. So, it’s important to consider what was in and what was out in these different decades – do you know your 1950s rockabilly looks from your 1960s Swinging mod outfits, your 1920s flapper dresses from your 1970s maxi dresses? Be aware too that the younger the garment – the more recent decade it’s from – the easier and more comfortable fit it may be.

    vintage dresses1

    Research pays off

This maxim could be applied to the above paragraph, of course; but it’s critical when it comes to parting with a lot of dosh for something that’s not brand new. Granted, if you’re thinking of splashing the cash on one of the many vintage style dresses UK available from online retro retailers rather than splurging on a vintage piece that’s half-a-century-old, it’s not such a big deal; but if the reverse is true, research into the item definitely pays off. So, learn how to recognise condition issues, what vintage/ retro fashion really suits your body-shape best and always seek out the advice of the retailers themselves, the more candid the better.

Don’t be afraid to tailor it

Finally, there’s no need to be shy about altering a vintage item you’ve bought. Yes, it may be decades old, but you’re buying it to wear it, not to hang it on the wall. And that means you shouldn’t put up with it not quite fitting as it might and not achieving that knock-out look you want when you pop it on. Investing a little extra in having an item tailored to totally fit you can really make the difference and so prove properly worthwhile. Mind you, specific items from some eras (especially the older ones) won’t be possible to alter in this way; so, learn to recognise items’ limitations in this regard – and, again, which items from which fashion era suit your body best.

  • Mixing the old with the new: top tips for wearing vintage

It may sound a daunting task, but mixing vintage fashion with modern togs is definitely possible, should you fancy doing so. In fact, get it right and the look can be devastating.  Different items of clothing, irrespective of what decade their look dates from or even when they were originally manufactured, can definitely go together, should you have a keen eye and put a bit of consider into how you mix and match. Not convinced? Read on and discover some of our tips for getting the most out of your vintage clobber by incorporating it into the maximum number of outfits you genuinely can…

How should you mix vintage with modern?

So, mixing old and new in fashion terms is actually easier in practice than you may imagine. And that’s because, if you’re dealing with clothing items – or accessories – that are simple and therefore versatile, there’s a good chance they’ll go with other such items. Indeed, you might want to consider such pieces as your ‘wardrobe essentials’ – it doesn’t matter whether if an item’s new or old; if it works as a building block of several different outfits, it can be considered a mainstay (there’s no need then, if it’s vintage, to keep it in a special ‘vintage draw’).

Indeed, you may want to think along the lines of:

    • Vintage ‘essentials’ that go with modern accessories – how many of your retro items can you embellish with contemporary additions like stylish clutch purses or trendy sandals?
    • Modern ‘essentials’ that go with vintage accessories – up-to-date garments (a fairly basic single-tone shirt, blouse or dress) can be enhanced with vintage touches like a floral handbag or round tortoise sunglasses.

    Vintage as the focus

Should you be rummaging through your wardrobe and pull out a favourite old-fashioned blazer – or come across a fantastic, nay beautiful example of vintage style dresses UK via a specialist online retailer that you just have to buy – you may suddenly have the urge to make it the centrepiece of an outfit. Fair enough. But how do you complement it with modern additions – accessories and other contemporary garments like a t-shirt, shoes, a bag or jewellery?

    vintage style dresses UK

The trick is keeping it simple; looks-wise, that is. Following the credo outlined above, if the vintage piece is bold and attention grabbing, supplement it with basic modern touches that won’t jar with it, thus won’t try to make fashion statements on their own. Conversely, if the vintage item’s on the basic, less-is-more side, feel free to do the opposite.

How to style vintage with modern

The above tips are all very well, of course, but what about genuinely looking stylish? What about not just mixing and matching the modern and vintage aspects of your collection because you fancy doing so, but looking properly chic as you do so? How can you really pull that off?

Wearing vintage right is all about being honest with yourself. How does it really look? If the appearance is verging on costume, then it’s probably not the outfit combo for a work-day (whatever the work environment) or a night out; let alone a stylish outfit at that. You need to mix well and not just throw together several of your favourite pieces – you might be surprised by what best goes together from among your contemporary and vintage items, so don’t be afraid to experiment; in fact, experimentation is key.

To keep it cool and not too outlandish, you might want to try and employ a 50/50 ratio – half of the outfit vintage; the other half contemporary. For instance, balance out a vintage blouse with sleek up-to-date pants or a simple skirt; with a vintage dress, add high-heeled modern sandals. There’s no golden rule or silver bullet – and there shouldn’t be, as you it’s also about feeling happy and comfortable in what you’re wearing and expressing yourself – but balance is a good aim to achieve, for sure.

  • Mix the Current and Contemporary with Stunning Vintage Pieces

When you first start to piece together a vintage outfit, then it is easy to fall into the trap of looking like you have just stepped out of a time machine. It may be appropriate for a ‘40s costume party, but if you want to wear classic pieces on a daily basis you need to create a more contemporary look which still has vintage elements.

But how do you get started? If you are new to the vintage game then it is best to keep things simple. You could begin by adding vintage accessories to a modern outfit. One key accessory such as a large patent belt could perfectly balance out an otherwise contemporary look. Take some time to think about wardrobe basics like a plain white T-shirt and a pair of boot-cut jeans. Just throw on a statement vintage belt over this classic look and you are ready to head out for the night.

They are also fantastic if you have to stick to a tight budget. You can get several pieces for the same amount as a single item of clothing. With a few accessories you can then create completely different outfits. Perhaps you could mix things up with a gorgeous scarf or pretty leather satchel, and really go to town. Also search for vintage necklaces, brooches, shoes and hats, and then think about what garments you can match them with.

You can always get inspired by current trends. Maybe you are not yet confident about pairing up vintage and modern pieces. If this is the case then look for vintage clothes which are similar to current fashions. A prime example is the comeback of the suede skirt. They were absolutely huge in the sixties and seventies, and have experienced a successful revival of late. All you need to do is find one which fits perfectly and looks great teamed with a pair of black heels, seamed stockings and a pretty, frilly top.

It is always a great idea to create a fashion statement with quirky vintage pieces. Vintage style dresses can be worn with modern accessories, yet still remain the primary focal point due to their beautiful, elegant appearance and timeless style. You do not want to draw too much attention to yourself by wearing accessories which will clash with your statement piece. When you are wearing something striking like a polka dot dress, keep accessories minimal.

If you manage to obtain a fifties-style skirt, then there are endless possibilities when it comes to styling. Keep things casual by wearing it with a patterned or plain T-shirt, depending on your own personal preferences. These skirts are already dressy enough on their own so you do not need to make many modifications, even if you want to dress them up for a formal event. A simple printed top with a statement necklace, brooch or bracelet will be all it takes to really work this look.

    floral-print-pencil-dress

If you want to party in style and make sure that all eyes on you then vintage prom dresses will do just the trick. They are girly and charming and a little bit different from the usual, run of the mill frocks which you normally see at important gala events. You do not need to go all out in order to dress to impress, as simplicity is often far more effective than if you overdo it and take things to extremes.

Cute rockabilly skirts are created to suit all body shapes, and if you pair these gorgeous garments with the right footwear then this will certainly cause a stir. If you are planning a romantic dinner for two and have been searching for the perfect ensemble then you will have hit the jackpot. Just remember that a couple of accessories are all you need in order to pull an outfit off and embrace the vintage look wholeheartedly.

  • Wearing Vintage is the Perfect Way to Express Yourself

There are so many different fashion trends and styles available on the market that it can be rather tricky knowing exactly what is in season, as everything seems to constantly evolve and change. The hottest item from last year’s catwalk could be considered passe and outdated just a few months later, so it is important to keep your finger on the pulse and be aware of what’s happening in the industry.

Classic combinations such as a leather jacket, skin-tight jeans and biker boots will never get old and tired as they always work well together. You could always wear a frayed suede top to add an element of vintage charm, and give the outfit an entirely new and interesting dimension.

However, for many of us it is important to think outside of the box and work our magic when it comes to wowing others with quirky pieces which have taken a great deal of thought and consideration. Planning an outfit takes time and effort, and you cannot wear the same thing two days in a row, so it is important to mix and match accordingly.

If you are lucky enough to live in the capital then there are plenty of places to frequent in order to pick up some charming bargains and have a good old rummage around. You do not want to look identical to everyone else, so maybe visit boutique jewellery outlets or even have pieces hand-made for that extra special touch.

So many places can customise certain pieces and add different embellishments or make alterations, so if you have something particular in mind then maybe this is the solution. You will always find traditional vintage items such as ‘40s style skirts, ruffled shirts and large clasp belts, but how can you differentiate one product from another? What makes something a must-have buy?

Is it the style, or the cut, or just that it really suits your overall style and would make the perfect addition to any wardrobe? Pretty Retro tea dresses are extremely popular, as they are quirky and cute without being too ostentatious and OTT. They come in a range of different shades, and work perfectly with a pair of kitten heels or patent pumps.

Black swing pants are also ideal for any occasion, as you can take a leisurely stroll around the park, go shopping for hours on end or board the train for a long journey and emerge refreshed, invigorated and ready to go. This is primarily due to the fact that they are incredibly comfortable, and add a hint of retro chic.

    black-swing-pants

A good black vintage satchel is an absolute must-have if you have to take essentials with you such as lipstick, eyeliner and even some rouge for that authentic ‘40s look. Faux leather handbags also work extremely well with a simple but sexy fitted dress, and you can finish the look off with a pair of dainty heels.

If you really want to stand out crowd and impress the fashion elite then dolly dotty dresses are certain to do the trick. They are cute, pretty and girly, and can be teamed with a range of accessories for that extra ‘wow factor’.

    dolly-dotty-dress

These stunning garments have been created for all shapes and sizes, and perfectly flatter your curves. And, if you pair them with some patent heels or peep-toe shoes then this will perfectly complement the overall look of your outfit. For something comfortable and figure-hugging, Hell Bunny vintage dresses are absolutely essential. Red and white and blue and white polka-dot designs are funky and fresh, and it is ever so easy to find matching accessories. A bright bangle or chunky ring would definitely do the trick, as this will draw even more attention and add a little sparkle and shine to the whole ensemble.

  • Why the Atomic Festival Is an Awesome Choice for Vintage-Clothes Lovers

Hey, fashion lovers! Today, I’m going to be talking about the Atomic Festival in Northamptonshire. It’s one that I take the time to go to every year, and it’s amazing.

atomic-festival For this blog, I’m going to focus on the fashion side of the event, because that’s what I do, but there is so much more to the festival than just fashion. There’s music and dancing that lasts until the early hours of the morning, there’s on site camping (and I stay there ever year. Absolutely incredible, if only to see the vintage caravans), food & drink, roller skating, golf, classic cars, fun fair, jive dancing classes, etc.

    atomic-vintage-festival

Yes, it is an absolutely fantastic festival and I don’t know anyone who can’t find something fun to do while they’re there, but today, I’m just going to stick to the fashion side of things. Boy, do they offer a lot for vintage fashion enthusiasts like me!

There are so many different aspects to the festival by way of fashion, so I’m going to look at each key area in turn and talk you through the type of things you can expect to find/do.

The Vintage Market This is huge. It’s one of the biggest vintage markets that I've ever visited, and for me, it’s worth the festival ticket price on its own. You'll find a massive assortment of clothes spanning from the ‘30s to the ‘70s. You’ll find both authentic and replica clothes – some of the vintage style dresses are mind-blowing. They combine modern techniques with older styles to create some of the most stunning designs that I’ve ever seen.

    vintage-market

And wow. If you’ve ever had trouble finding vintage accessories and shoes then look no further than the Atomic Festival market. I’m unusual in that I wear size 9 shoes, and that’s quite large for a lady, particularly one from 40-50 years ago, but even I managed to find something in their collection.

As well as clothes, they sell other vintage items too – the music collectors amongst you will love it.

The Flea Market If you’re looking for a bargain, or you're looking to sell your own stuff, then the flea market is fantastic. It’s only on for one morning, so you have to be quick if you want to find those bargains or special buyers.

    Flea Market

You won’t find any vintage style dresses at the flea market, because everything has to be authentic. Be careful if you're selling clothes, because they don’t take kindly to people that accidentally sell replica pieces! That’s not because they’re mean, but because the authenticity of the times is upheld above all else. This is a real flea market from a bygone era. Super fun.

The Look Of course, the vintage look isn’t only about the clothes; it’s also about the overall look. You’ll find a range of people that can help you achieve whatever vintage look you want. There are barbers, beauty parlours, manicurists, and tattooists (yes, a real tattooist!), all focused on creating the vintage look.

I hope you can now appreciate just how awesome this festival is and I hope to see you there!
